SIGGRAPH 2001
(August 1, 2001 - Marina del Rey, CA) Huge Systems, a new manufacturer of RAID 3 Storage Solutions for SDTV and HDTV applications, has started shipping their HugeMediaVault™ family of products and will showcase this technology at the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2001 Exhibition, scheduled for August 14-16, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The HugeMediaVault family of desktop storage systems is available in a number of fast, secure, cost effective configurations. At SIGGRAPH, the company will offer "Show Specials" that reduce these prices an additional 10-15%.
HugeMediaVault can be configured for both SDTV and HDTV applications through either a single or dual channel U160 SCSI 3 controller. The single channel version supports data transfer rates of 160 MegaBytes/second burst, 80 MegaBytes/second sustained, which is more than enough for multiple, uncompressed streams of SDTV data. The HugeMediaVault-DualMax product offers 320 MegaBytes/second burst and a sustained transfer rate of at least 200 MegaBytes/second, making it suitable for HDTV applications at resolutions up to and including 1080i at 10 bits.
Data security is a high priority for Huge Systems and the HugeMediaVault product family provides this at many levels. The product includes fault-tolerant hardware RAID 3 with on-the-fly hardware reconstruction. All products also have a secure data encryption option that utilizes a hardware dongle to activate a data encryption scheme. Without the hardware key in place, writing to the system is disabled and all existing data can only be read in encrypted form for data backup purposes. Even if the system is being serviced, as long as the customer keeps the key, the content cannot be accessed! A high-speed backup feature is also included to copy data from one HugeMediaVault to another at rates in excess of 1 GB every 5 seconds. Finally, large fans and power supplies ensure that the product has adequate power and cooling to work continuously in a standard office environment.
To meet the wide variety of customers needs, HugeMediaVault is available in 16 different configurations, ranging from 90 GigaBytes to 1 TeraByte. All systems utilize the same compact exterior packaging, making it easy to integrate the system into any customer environment. Pricing begins at under $3,000 for the 90 GigaByte version and increases to around $10,000 for the 1 TeraByte model (approximately $10 per GigaByte of storage). In a bold move, the "Show Special" price for the TeraByte model will be $8,676, bringing the cost per GigaByte to under $9.
All of these features have been incorporated into a product that is extremely easy to use. HugeMediaVault has no user-removable components, so it's totally plug and play.
