StageTools Announces OnStage! Idea Editor
(Middleburg, VA -- January 6, 1999) -- StageTools announces OnStage!, a previsualization tool designed for motion picture and video producers or directors that will help them create, modify and preview the flow of their shows. This concept was pioneered in the early ‘80s by Francis Ford Coppola with his "Silverfish" mobile editing studio. His notion of the "Electronic Cinema" included tools to aid the thought process and OnStage! turns this dream into reality.
OnStage! is a nonlinear idea editor, where scenes are edited in much the same way as words are edited on a word processor. It is also a previsualization tool that creates a rough approximation of a show to aid the planning of the production, before and during the shooting process.
Pre-visualization software is like a storyboard--a tool to create a rough-cut of the flow of a show to test ideas and communicate to the crew the vision of the director or producer. In the case of OnStage!, this vision is presented in 3-D. The director can create the scenery and stage sets for each scene, and vary that scenery with the click of a mouse. Actors then "move" in 3-D through the stage sets. Every element in a scene can be edited, including the camera, allowing the director to create exactly what is desired for each scene.
OnStage! is ideal for making test commercials, or animatics. Spots can be developed by creative and/or art directors to quickly try out a variety of ideas and convey them to the client in a way they can easily grasp. OnStage! can even create digital movie files that can be directly used by most nonlinear editing systems.
The benefits are immediate. OnStage! enables producers and directors to visualize their ideas with far greater accuracy and flexibility than storyboarding. Scene changes can be tested with a minimum of expense. Show creators can communicate their vision with greater clarity, whether to crew and cast on a show or to investors who pay for the show.
OnStage! was created by StageTools, a company dedicated to providing high productivity design tools to the professional creative community. StageTools is headed by Bill Ferster, the founder of West End Film and Editing Machines Corporation. EMC developed the first digital nonlinear editing system and received an EMMY Award, for pioneering a technology that has revolutionized the way films and videos are edited.
OnStage! will be distributed exclusively by L&S Marketing, Inc. in Albuquerque, NM. L&S is run by Sheldon Liebman, another 3-D animation and video veteran, who is developing a global reseller network for OnStage! While that network is being established, the product will be available directly from L&S Marketing.
OnStage! is Windows 95/98/NT based and supports the OpenGL 3D rendering standard. This makes OnStage! compatible with a wide variety of inexpensive 3D acceleration cards for real time performance.
